Oil Crisis

After the oil crisis hit in full in 2014, many companies in both the maritime sector and the oil industry have had to downsize.

The youngest workers often make the weakest because they have the lowest seniority, and lose their jobs as a result of this. At the same time, many of the industry veterans have to say yes to work they are over qualified.

Managing Director of the Norwegian Maritime Officer, Hans Sande, says they do not know exactly how many have formal skills that are higher than their level of employment, but that there are many.

"We do not have figures on this, but just see how many boats are in stock," he says to Sysla today.

- Tell you that it was important for you to work
The oil city of Stavanger has also noted a greater inflow of over classified applicants for positions in the municipality as a result of the downturn.

But what does it really mean for your job chances if you have a position you are over qualified?

Research from the University of Texas in Austin, USA shows that employers are less attractive when they have such a job on their resume.

Recruitment expert and associate professor at the College of Higher Education nevertheless emphasizes that employers understand that the labor market may be depleted.

- Did you lose the oil job, telling you that it was important for you to work and that you lowered job expectations for a period of time to achieve it.

Someone is disturbed
At the same time, many find it hard to get jobs that you are over qualified. When the sports shop Anton Sport at Bekkestua announced three new jobs in advance, they saw that several of the applicants had a background from the oil industry, Budstikka reported.

Then the head of department in Adecco Asker and Bærum, Hanne Dahl Aabakken, pointed out that they found that their customers did not want candidates who looked overclassified on the paper.

The main reason for this is that employers can not always meet wage expectations, and at the same time they have experienced that those who fall into pay are unhappy in the long run.

"Another reason may be past experience that the employee does not last for a long time when a more current position appears or that they have experienced that employees who are used to working more strategically do not enjoy operational tasks and less influence than they are used to till, she said to the newspaper.

- The phenomenon is inflated:
Professor at NHH, Kjell G. Salvanes, believes that the phenomenon of over classified workers is inflated.

- Many believe that they are over-qualified without them. When industries are reduced, part is left with a pointed expertise that can be difficult to use in other industries, he says.

For example, it is not provided that a Leader is very qualified for work on land, explains the professor.

"Of course, some education and experience can be transferred to other jobs, for example, a Leader can have more good qualities and experience that can suit many jobs, such as crisis experience," says Salvanes.

But you do not want to get a job at the same level, he points out.

"Then the solution can be to wage in another industry, and then work up again with experience," he says.
