 William Hart, often referred to as the "father of natural gas," made a significant discovery in 1821 in Fredonia, New York. He drilled the first well specifically intended to extract natural gas, reaching a depth of 27 feet initially and later extending it to 70 feet [1] [2]. This well tapped into gas-bearing shale, marking the beginning of the natural gas industry in the United States [3].

Hart's innovation led to the use of natural gas for lighting streets and buildings in Fredonia, transforming the town into a pioneer of modern energy use [3]. His efforts laid the groundwork for the commercial natural gas industry, which has since become a crucial part of the global energy landscape.
